NATURA 2000 Protected Areas

Antinioti Lagoon

The Antinioti Lagoon, also known as the “Lake of Orchids” or the “Lily Lake,” is one of Corfu’s hidden treasures. Located at the northeastern tip of the island, between Agios Spyridonas and Almyros beaches, this stunning natural landscape is a must-visit.

A Paradise of Biodiversity

Spanning approximately 400 hectares, the lagoon consists of the Kounoufadi marsh and the main lagoon area. It is home to rare aquatic plants, wildflowers, and reeds, creating a rich and diverse habitat. Floating orchids and water lilies add a unique aesthetic to the landscape.

The Antinioti Lagoon hosts over 90 species of migratory birds, including herons and cormorants, making it a prime birdwatching destination. It is also a refuge for the rare Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra), one of Europe’s most endangered mammals.

Activities for Visitors

The lagoon is connected to the sea through two outlets, while freshwater springs are located to its southeast. Visitors can enjoy nature walks, birdwatching, and photography, following the trails that weave through the surrounding forest.

Protection and Conservation

The Antinioti Lagoon is a protected NATURA 2000 area, recognized for its ecological importance and rich biodiversity. Preserving this unique ecosystem is crucial for maintaining the region’s environmental balance.

Getting There

Access to the lagoon is via Agios Spyridonas Beach in Perithia, crossing a small bridge that connects the beach to the Nisós islet. The route is easy and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

Wetlands in the Kalami Area

Erimitis – A Natural Haven

The Erimitis region, located on Corfu’s northeastern coast, is one of the island’s most significant ecosystems. It is a sanctuary of natural beauty, featuring turquoise waters, hidden coves, and minimal human intervention. Each of its bays hosts pebble beaches of unparalleled beauty, many of which remain untouched and accessible only by sea.

Erimitis is also home to three lakes – Akoli, Vromolimni, and the Erimitis Marsh (Savoura) – which have been listed as protected wetlands by WWF Hellas.

Akoli Lake

Surrounded by dense vegetation, Akoli Lake is separated from the sea by a narrow pebble beach. Historically, during the Venetian era, the lake was connected to the sea via a small channel and was once used as a fish farm. The nearby Akoli Beach is renowned for its turquoise waters and untouched beauty.

Vromolimni

Vromolimni is the southernmost lake of the three, bordered by lush greenery. It is near Aspalathras Beach, which takes its name from the wild Aspalathos shrub found in the area. The secluded Korfovonia Beach, known for its protection from strong winds, is also nearby.

Savoura (Erimitis Marsh)

Savoura is the third lake of Erimitis, located close to Avlaki Beach, one of Corfu’s most frequented beaches. It is an integral part of the Erimitis ecosystem, serving as a habitat for rare wildlife species.

A Biodiversity Hotspot

Erimitis is a crucial feeding, resting, and breeding ground for migratory and aquatic birds, such as robins, ferruginous ducks, moorhens, and terns. The area is also home to rare species, including the Eurasian otter, the Mediterranean monk seal, and the bottlenose dolphin.

Its underwater seagrass meadows (Posidonia oceanica) play a vital role in carbon sequestration and serve as a crucial marine habitat for numerous aquatic species.
